Writing Your Cancer Story is a writing group offered to people who are currently receiving treatment for cancer. The four-session-group will feature a variety of topics related to living with cancer from diagnosis through treatment. A goal is healing with words — participants will create their own unique works by responding to writing prompts and will be encouraged to share their work and engage in discussion.
Individuals don’t have to be a “writer” to do this type of writing. The expressive writing process allows participants to write deep thoughts and feelings about their cancer journey without regard to form or other writing conventions like spelling, punctuation, and verb agreement. As opposed to talking, writing has the added benefit of including time for reflection and introspection that talking doesn’t allow. This group will give those dealing with a cancer diagnosis an an outlet to express their feelings in a nonjudgmental, confidential environment. Many studies have found that writing helps reduce anxiety, stress, and depression while boosting mental, physical and emotional health.
For four Thursdays July 15 – August 6 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm, the sessions will be facilitated by Jane Baker Segelken, a patient advocate and social worker who was diagnosed with cancer in 1996. Writing Your Cancer Story will provide an environment that is safe and nurturing, encourage unrestrained narrative expression, offer an opportunity to share and support, and advance therapeutic value through creativity. Contact Sharon at sharon@crcfl.net or 607-277-0960 to register.
